  Goldie’s Secret

She turned up at the doorstep of my house in Cornwall. No way could I have sent her away. No way,not me anyway. Maybe someone had kicked her out of their car the night before.“We’re moving house.” “No space for her any more with the baby coming.”“We never really wanted her,but what could we have done? She was a present.”People find all sorts of excuses for abandoning an animal. And she was one of the most beautiful dogs I had ever seen.

I called her Goldie. If I had known what was going to happen I would have given her a more creative name. She was so unsettled during those first few days. She hardly ate anything and had such an air of sadness about her. There was nothing I could do to make her happy,it seemed.Heaven knows what had happened to her at her previous owner’s. But eventually at the end of the first week she calmed down.Always by my side, whether we were out on one of our long walks or sitting by the fire.

That’s why it was such a shock when she pulled away from me one day when we were out for a walk. We were a long way from home, when she started barking and getting very restless. Eventually I couldn’t hold her any longer and she raced off down the road towards a farmhouse in the distance as fast as she could.

By the time I reached the farm I was very tired and upset with Goldie. But when I saw her licking (舔) the four puppies (幼犬) I started to feel sympathy towards them.“We didn’t know what had happened to her,”said the woman at the door.“I took her for a walk one day, soon after the puppies were born, and she just disappeared.”“She must have tried to come back to them and got lost,”added a boy from behind her.

I must admit I do miss Goldie, but I’ve got Nugget now,and she looks just like her mother. And I’ve learnt a good lesson:not to judge people.

  Passage 1

(2011·重慶)There was a gardener who looked after his garden with great care. To water his flowers, he used two buckets. One was a shiny and new bucket. The other was a very old and dilapidated one, which had seen many years of service, but was now past its best.

Every morning, the gardener would fill up the two buckets. Then he would carry them along the path, one on each side, to the flowerbeds. The new bucket was very proud of itself. It could carry a full bucket of water without a single drop spilled (溢出). The old bucket felt very ashamed because of its holes: before it reached the flowerbeds, much water had leaked along the path.

Sometimes the new bucket would say, “See how capable I am! How good it is that the gardener has me to water the flowers every day! I don’t know why he still bothers with you. What a waste of space you are!”

And all that the old bucket could say was, “I know I’m not very useful, but I can only do my best. I’m happy that the gardener still finds a little bit of use in me, at least.”

One day, the gardener heard that kind of conversation. After watering the flowers as usual, he said, “You both have done your work very well. Now I am going to carry you back. I want you to look carefully along the path.”

Then the two buckets did so. All along the path, they noticed, on the side where the new bucket was carried, there was just bare (光禿禿的)earth; on the other side where the old bucket was carried, there was a joyous row of wild flowers, leading all the way to the garden.

  1. What does the underlined word “dilapidated” probably mean?

  A. Dirty

  B. Dark

  C. Worn-out

  D. Plain-looking.

One was a shiny and new bucket. The other was a very old and dilapidated one. The old bucket felt very ashamed because of its holes: before it reached the flowerbeds, much water had leaked along the path.

  2. What was the old bucket ashamed of?

  A. His past.

  B. His aging.

  A. laugh at the old one

  B. take pity on the old one

  C. show off its beautiful looks

  答案 A

  4. Why was the old bucket still kept by the gardener?

  A. Because it was used to keep a balance

  B. Because it stayed in its best condition

  C. Because it was taken as a treasure

  D. Because it had its own function

  Passage 2

I was working as a consultant in a beer company, helping the president and senior vice-presidents form and carry out their new planning projects. It was really a great challenge.

At the same time, my mother was in the final stages of cancer.

I worked during the day and drove 40 miles home to be with her every night. It was tiring and stressful, but it was what I wanted to do. My commitment was to continue to do excellent consulting during the day, even though my evenings were very hard. I didn’t want to bother the president with my situation, yet I felt someone at the company needed to know what was going on. So I told the vice-president of Human Resources, asking him not to share the information with anyone.

A few days later, the president called me into his office.

I figured he wanted to talk to me about one of the many issues we were working on. When I entered, he asked me to sit down. He faced me from across his large desk, looked me in the eye and said, “I hear your mother is very ill.”

I was totally caught by surprise and burst into tears. He just looked at me, let my crying subside(平息), and then gently said a sentence I will never forget: Whatever you need.

That was it. His understanding and his willingness both to let me be in my pain and to offer me everything were qualities of sympathy that I carry with me to this day.

  Passage 3

(2011·監利中學高三第一次摸底)It was my first day at school in London and I was half-excited and half-frightened. On my way to school I wondered what sort of questions the other boys would ask me and rehearsed (practiced) all the answers: “I am nine years old. I was born here

but I haven’t lived here since I was two. I was living in Farley. It’s about thirty miles away. I came back to London two months ago.” I also wondered if it was the custom for boys to fight strangers like me, but I was tall for my age. I hoped they would decide not to risk it.

No one took any notice of me before school. I stood in the center of the playground, expecting someone to say “hello”, but no one spoke to me. When a teacher called my name and told me where my classroom was, one or two boys looked at me but that was all the curiosity my arrival aroused.

My teacher was called Mr Jones. There were 42 boys in the class, so I didn’t stand out there, either, until the first lesson of the afternoon.

Mr Jones was very fond of Charles Dickens and he had decided to read aloud to us from David Copperfield, but first he asked several boys if they knew Dickens’ birthplace, but no one guessed right. A boy called Brian, the biggest in the class, said;“Timbuktu”, and Mr Jones went red in the face. Then he asked me.I said;“Portsmouth”, and everyone stared at me because Mr Jones said I was right. This didn’t make me very popular, of

  course.

“He thinks he’s clever,” I heard Brian say.

After that, we went out to the playground to play football. I was in Brian’s team, and he obviously had Dickens in mind because he told me to go in goal. No one ever wanted to be the goalkeeper.

“He’s big enough and useless enough,” Brian said when someone asked him why he had chosen me.

I suppose Mr. Jones remembered Dickens, too, because when the game was nearly over, Brian pushed one of the players on the other team, and he gave them a penalty. As the boy kicked the ball hard along the ground to my right, I threw myself down instinctively and saved it. All my team crowded round me. My bare knees were grazed and bleeding. Brian took out a handkerchief and offered it to me.

“Do you want to join my gang (team)?” he said.

At the end of the day, I was no longer a stranger.

1.The writer prepared to answer all of the following questions EXCEPT“ ________”.

  A. How old are you?

  B. Where are you from?

  C. Do you want to join my gang?

  D. When did you come back to London?

2.We can learn from the passage that________.

  A. boys were usually unfriendly to new students

  B. the writer was not greeted as he expected

  C. Brian praised the writer for his cleverness

  D. the writer was glad to be a goalkeeper

根據第二段內容中的“I stood in the center of the playground, expecting someone to say “hello”, but no one spoke to me.”

3.The underlined part “I didn’t stand out” in paragraph 3 means that the writer

  was not________.

  A. noticeable

  B. welcome

  C. important

  D. outstanding

  答案 A

4.The writer was offered a handkerchief because________.

  A. he threw himself down and saved the goal

  B. he pushed a player on the other team

  C. he was beginning to be accepted

  D. he was no longer a new comer

根據文章中的“I was no longer a stranger.”
