“I studied for my test, got my license and __4__ what I thought was going to be just a very small operation,” explains Gilbert with a quiet laughter. “I didn’t think that I would take in injured birds. (2024·長沙高三模擬考試)Along rocky coastlines of the Arctic Ocean,a change is taking place, perhaps as great as disappearing sea ice but less evident to the eye.The ecological base is changing, with existing algae(海藻)replaced by warmth and light-loving species. It might not seem like much, but algae form the base of ocean food chains, and the change is happening fast.

“The character of these far-ranging changes, confirmed by our statistical analyses, provides a convincing case for tipping points(臨界點)being crossed,”wrote researchers led by the scientist Susanne Kortsch who studies life in the sea.For scientists, tipping points aren’t just pop-culture shorter way of saying, but refer to a specific type of conversion:happen quickly and not develop from one thing to another in a single smooth series of stages, with one set of conditions translating into another.

About life in the sea, that’s been seen in the western Mediterranean, now controlled by animals with no backbone, and Caribbean coral reefs(珊瑚礁)now filled by algae. As for the Arctic, they’ve been discovered, but mostly on land or in freshwater lakes and swamps.

Kortsch and her University of Tromso colleagues went to sea, examining two Arctic bays(海灣)in the western Svalbard islands.Researchers have studied those bays for more than three decades.Between 1980 and 2010,the region’s summer ice-free season lengthened by an average of 3.3 days per year.

“Such changes aren’t simple,”say Kortsch’s group. They’re what ecologists call regime shifts(穩態轉換),in which one set of plants and animals is almost entirely replaced by another. They’re not limited to two bays but appear on much of the Arctic Ocean’s shores, either. How will these changes influence food chains? It stands to reason that some changes will occur, but accurate data is needed.“At present,we simply don’t know the answers,”Kortsch said.

The researchers do infer that these new coastline ecosystems could be more productive than before.Warming in the Arctic is accelerating at twice the average global rate.By 2050 the Arctic Ocean may be completely ice-free in summer. For these new coastline ecosystems, only one thing can be said with certainty: It’s not going to be like what it was.

1.The reason why algae are very important to the ocean is that ________.

A.they can keep sea ice from disappearing

B.they form the base of ocean food chains

C.they form the top class of ocean food chains

D.they can become main food of mankind

2.What does the underlined word“conversion”in Paragraph 2 mean?

  A.Change.

  B.Dialogue.

  C.Challenge.

  D.Choice.

3.We can learn from the passage that ________.

A.Kortsch’s group has studied the environment in the Arctic Ocean for three decades

B.tipping points refer to sea ice in the Arctic Ocean which is disappearing gradually

C.how the food chains would be influenced still needs study

D.life in the sea can’t be influenced by the changes in the Arctic Ocean

4.What conclusion can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.The Arctic Ocean will keep the same situation in the next two decades.

B.The Arctic Ocean’s situation suggests global warming is quickening sharply.

C.Regime shifts occur only in several regions of the Arctic Ocean.

D.New coastline ecosystems in the Arctic Ocean could be less productive than before.

5.What’s the best title for the passage?

A.Arctic Coastlines Being in Face of Danger Now

B.Serious Atmospheric Problems in Arctic Coastlines

C.Ways to Improve Arctic Coastline Environment

D.Arctic Coastlines Hitting Ecological Tipping Point

A study in China’s Qin Mountains, which is home to around 270 pandas—about a fifth of the world’s wild population—predicts that the amount of bamboo will decline(減少) this century as the global warming continues.

“The pandas may face a shortage of food unless they can find alternative food resources,”a team of researchers from the U.S.and China warn in the journal Nature Climate Change.

The international symbol of environmental conservation efforts, the giant panda is a picky eater.99% of its diet consists of bamboo. It eats up to 38 kilograms per day. This means the black-and-white bear’s survival is closely linked to a thriving(繁榮的) bamboo habitat.

Bamboo itself also has a slow reproductive rate, flowering only every 30 to 35 years, which means it would be slow to adapt to a change in a local climate, according to the researchers.

Based on the data gathered for this study, researchers predict that three bamboo species which make up almost the entire diet of the pandas in Qin Mountains, will all but disappear in a warmer climate.

“Results suggest that almost the entire panda habitat in the region may disappear by the end of the 21st century,”the study’s authors write.

The calculations are based on different warming scenarios(方案)projected by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change—ranging from rises of 2℃ to 5℃ in summer by the 21st century’s end,and 3 to 8℃ in winter.

These predictions were made based on data on rainfall and emission of greenhouse gas as well as historical growth patterns,to consider the future of bamboo.

Already, deforestation(濫伐森林)is threatening the survival of about half of all bamboo species worldwide.

The researchers say bamboo distribution has historically fluctuated in response to changes in the climate.

In modern times, though, even if other areas were to become climatically more suitable for bamboo growth, these would be far away and fall outside the present network of protected panda reserves.

The findings should be used “for proactive planning to protect areas that have a better climatic chance of providing adequate food sources”.

6.What is the problem with giant pandas?

  A.Their habitat is disappearing.

  B.Their number is reducing sharply.

C.They will not have bamboo to eat.

  D.They have difficulty in reproducing.

7.What do we know about pandas?

  A.They feed chiefly on bamboo.

  B.They are particular about partners.

C.They are sensitive to climate changes.

D.They are native to Qin Mountains.

  8.What is typical of bamboo?

A.It flowers for a short period.

B.It can live for as long as 35 years.

C.It grows only in warm regions.

D.It is slow in reproducing itself.

9.Which word can replace the underlined word “fluctuated” in Paragraph 10?

  A.formed

  B.changed

  C.disappeared

  D.worsened

10.Why can’t pandas get access to bamboo in other areas?

A.They are limited to nature reserves.

B.They don’t like walking far away.

C.They are feed with all kinds of food.

D.They are not allowed to walk freely.
