Adrian's “Amazing Race” started early when his parents realized that he, as a baby, couldn't hear a thing, not even loud noises. In a special school for the hearing-impaired (聽覺受損的),he learned sign language and got to mix with other disabled

children. However, the sight of all the disabled children communicating with one another upset his mother. She wanted him to lead a normal life.So after speaking to an advisor, she sent him to private classes where he learned to read lips and pronounce words.

Later on, Adrian's parents decided to send him to a regular school. But the headmaster tried to prevent them from doing so, saying regular school couldn't take care of a special student. His parents were determined to take the risk and push him hard to go through his work every day because they wanted to prove that, given the opportunity, he could do anything.Adrian made the grade and got accepted. It was a big challenge. The pace (節奏)was faster so he had to sit at the front of the class and really pay attention to the teacher, which wasn'talways easy. But he stuck to it and did a lot of extra work after school.

The efforts made by Adrian and his parents paid off.Adrian graduated with good grades and got into a top high school. He also achieved a lot in life outside school. He developed a love for the outdoors and went to Nepal to climb mountains. He even entered the World Yacht Race—being the first hearing-impaired Asian to do so.

But none of these achievements would have been possible without one of the most important lessons from his mother. “If you believe in yourself and work hard, you can achieve greatresults,” she often said.

  “I Went Skydiving at 84!”

As a young girl growing up in the 1930s, I always wanted to fly a plane, but back then it was almost unheard of for a woman to do that. I got a taste of that dream in 2001,when my husband arranged for me to ride in a hot air balloon for my birthday. But the experience turned out to be very dull. Around that time,I told my husband that I wanted to skydive. So when our retirement community(社區)announced that they were having an essay competition and the topic was an experience of a lifetime that you wanted to have, I decided to write about my dream.

In the essay, I wrote about my desire to skydive, stating George Bush Sr. did it at age 80. Why not me? I was just 84 and in pretty good health. A year went by and I heard nothing. But then at a community party in late April 2009, they announced that I was one of the winners. I just couldn’t believe it.Inspired by this,I decided to realize my dream, even though some of my family members and my doctor were against it.

On June 11, 2009, nearly 40 of my family and friends gathered in the area close to where I would land while I headed up in the airplane. My instructor, Jay, guided me through the experience. The plane was the noisiest one I had ever been in, but I wasn’t frightened—I was really just looking forward to the experience. When we reached 13,000 feet, Jay instructed me to throw myself out of the plane. When we first hit the air, the wind was so strong that I could hardly breathe. For a second I thought, “What have I gotten myself into?” But then everything got calmer. We were in a free fall for about a minute before Jay opened the parachute(降落傘), then we just floated downward for about five minutes. Being up in the clouds and looking at the view below was unlike anything I have ever felt—much better than the hot air balloon. I was just enjoying it.

Skydiving was really one of the greatest experiences of my life. I hope other people will look at me and realize that you don’t stop living just because you are 84 years old. If there’s something you want to experience, look into it. If it’s something that is possible, make it happen.

agree to one's suggestion“同意某人的建議”,suggestion后面是that引導的同位語從句,work后省略了should。

lie in“在于”;result from“因……

  6.A 考查sb.be dressed in 句式。

turn to“轉向……求助”,turn on“打開”,turn off“關閉”,turn over“翻轉”。

  8.B be supposed to do/to be為固定搭配,意為“應該,大家認為是”。

故選A。

burn off意為“燒掉某物”;burn out 意為“燒盡,熄滅;耗盡體力”;burn up意為“被燒毀”;burn to the ground意為“全部燒光”。

exchange a few words with“與…… change“改變”;talk sth.through“暢敘衷腸”;talk about sth.“談論某事”。

get away from“走開,躲開”。

We had not met since then可知,此處是倒裝句,所以將否定詞置于句首。

the far end of the corridor“走道的遠端”;get off“下車”。

find sb.sth.“給某人找來某物”。

a narrow escape“僥幸逃脫”。

  24.B run into“碰到,不期而遇”。
