The traditional teaching and learning process in China is constantly being challenged by educational reformists trying to create something better. As a pilot of the new course, all 600 Senior One students chose the 152 research topics. The research type learning, which is based on students independent thinking and creation, targets the students overall (全面的) development and forging application ability.

The results of the research is not that important, said Ma Yuxuan of the school, adding that it is the participation and the process that really matter. Ma and her other group member finally decided to investigate students ideal professions as their research topic after an hour long discussion. The research topics of class five are closely related with reality. Their investigations cover juveniles weight and health, air pollution and environmental protection, Hakka culture, and drug prevention.

One student called Zhang Ked said that the research type learning developed students’ ability, strengthened their competitiveness for the future, and shared the same objective as the annual college entrance examination. An investigation by Beijing Normal University’s research institute on students creativity indicated that Senior Two students in China showed a low creativity. A comparative study showed that Chinese students’ creativity is far below that of their counterparts in Britain. Almost everyone loves trees, but do you know that tree can help sick people recover faster?

It’s true. According to the International Society of Arboriculture (樹木培植), hospital patients have been shown to recover faster when they are given a view with trees. Also, while trees certainly benefit any landscape, whether lining streets, decorating urban areas, or growing naturally in the forest, they are actually important in our daily lives.

Trees improve the quality of the air around us by absorbing dust and other particles(顆粒物). Their leaves also absorb harmful gases before we have a chance to take them in. They also protect us from the sun, rain, hail(冰雹), and snow, which can quickly damage unprotected homes. Even better, they often clean oxgiygen for us to breathe.

Trees make economic sense. A home surrounded by trees costs less to cool and heat. Neighborhoods with trees are often several degrees cooler in summer than those in similar climates that don’t have trees. In winter, trees can keep houses warmer by blocking strong winds. Also, less water is needed to water grass and gardens in tree-shaded areas where the sun isn’t constantly shining.

Besides that, trees can further improve privacy, block unpleasant views, and increase the value of your home. Unfortunately, these days, construction projects tend to wipe out all the trees in an area before creating new neighborhoods and buildings. That’s more important than ever to plant a tree in your community.

4.The best title of the passage is about______.

  A. planting a tree in your community

  B. planting a tree in your family

  C. improving people’s privacy

  D. improving people’s life

5.Trees change the quality of air because______.

  A. they can protect us from natural disasters

  B. they can take in much dust and other particles

  C. they often clean oxgiygen for us to breathe

  D. they are of great importance in our daily life

6.According to the passage, we know that ______ is wrong.

  A. trees can offer people a good place to cool

  B. trees can make people get warmer

  C. trees can bring people many benefits

  D. trees are likely to be damaged by people

Jack sits in the coffee bar that looks at Jaffa Street listening to the sad, sad music playing on an old tape recorder. “ Oum Khalsoum”, says one of the other men sitting in the coffee bar to nobody in particular. “ This is Oum Khalsoum singing”.

Jack takes another sip of sweet mint(薄荷) tea and nods in agreement without saying anything. His uncle lives in Egypt, and every time he visits him, he tells him the story of how he saw the well-known singer at one of her concerts in Cairo in 1970, not long before she died. The song seems to go on forever, and it’s very sad. He thinks it’s beautiful, but he doesn’t want to hear it now. It’s too sad for him. It makes him think of his uncle in Egypt who he hasn’t seen for many years now, and also about the reason why his uncle lives in Egypt while his aunt lived in Lebanon and why he, on the other hand, lives in Jordan, and why he is in Jerusalem now.

His father died a few months ago. After that, he found that there were so many things that he had wanted to ask his father, but had never asked . He realized that he knew very little about his own family, and decided to try and find out more about the place where his father had grown up, and where his grandparents (who had died when he was very young) were from.

He has now spent a couple of days wandering around Jerusalem with an old, torn photograph in his hand. The photograph shows the whole family, his grandparents standing proudly at the centre of a group of four children in front of a house on a busy street. Next to the house there seems to be a garden with what look like olive (橄欖色) trees in it.

Jack, though, can’t find anywhere in this modern Jerusalem that looks much like the street or the house where the photograph was taken. He feels sadder than the sad song playing in the cafe, thinking now that he might never find the place where his father had been born and the place where his grandparents had lived until they moved away in 1947.

7.According to the passage, the sad music make Jack think of _____.

  A. His uncle

  B. His father

  C. His mother

  D. His family

8.We can know that Jack used to live______.

  A. in Egypt

  B. in Jerusalem

  C. in Jordan

  D. in Cairo

9.Jack tried to find out that_____.

  A. Where his father lived in the past

  B. Where his grandparents was from

  C. He wanted to know more about his family D. All of above

  10.It is implied that______.

  A. Jack wants his family to lead a good life

  B. Jack has a photograph taken with his family

  C. Jack looks happy and enjoys love from his family

  D. Jack is a lonely man and knows little about his father

  D

I found out one time that doing a favor for someone could get you into a lot of trouble. I was in the eighth grade at the time, and we were having a final test. During the test, the girl sitting next to me whispered something, but I didn’t understand. So I leaned over her way and found out that she was trying to ask me if I had an extra pen. She showed me that hers was out of ink and would not write. I happened to have an extra one, so I took it out of my pocket and put it on her desk.

Later, after the test papers had been turned in, the teacher asked me to remain in the room when all the other students were dismissed. As soon as we were alone she began to talk to me about what it meant to grow up; she talked about how important it was to stand on your own two feet and be responsible for your own acts. For a long time, she talked about honesty and emphasized the fact that when people do something dishonest, they are really cheating themselves. She made me promise that I would think seriously about all the things she had said, and then she told me I could leave. I walked out of the room wondering why she had chosen to talk to me about all those things.

Later on, I found out that she thought I had cheated on the test. When she saw me lean over to talk to the girl next to me, it looked as if I was copying answers from the girl’s test paper. I tried to explain about the pen, but all she could say was that it seemed very strange to her that I hadn’t talked of anything about the pen the day she talked to me right after the test. Even if I tried to explain that I was just doing the girl a favor by letting her use my pen, I am sure she continued to believe that I had cheated on the test.

11.Form the passage, we knew the story appeared_______.

  A. in a teacher’s office

  B. in a language lab

  C. in a school playground

  D. in an exam room

12.What did the girl want me to do?

  A. help her write with a pen.

  B. use an extra pen to write.

  C. aid her to get out of trouble.

  D. sit next to me.

13.When the teacher saw this, she asked the boy_____.

  A. to stay behind after the exam

  B. to stop to take the exam

  C. to leave the room at once

  D. to continue writing his paper

14.Why was I puzzled after my teacher talked to me at that time?

  A. because I didn’t understand what she said.

  B. because I doubted if what she said was right.

  C. because I didn’t know she was joking with me.

  D. because I doubted if she was complaining to me.

15.From the third paragraph we can infer that my attitude to my teacher is ______.

  A. dishonest

  B. honest

  C. disappointed

  D. negativ

  A:B B C

  B: A B B

  C: A C D D

  D: D C A A B
